After weeks of waiting we finally got our results back via e-mail and although i may not have expected much i was a bit annoyed at given the results of unsuccessful and with the below replied feedbac which states that they had expected a longer animation when the brief states a 30-60 second animation and we had focused more on the development side but although this wasn't a success next time we will seek more detail into the brief and gain an understanding before choosing it.
Hello Ifraz,
I am writing to tell you that the results for the D&AD Student Awards 2011 are now online. Please log in to see how you have fared at http://www.dandad.org/awards/student/entry/studentawardsentry/profile.php
This year’s judging was a very rewarding experience for all involved and the feedback from the jurors has covered a wide variety of areas both positive and negative.
All the juries with the new remote first round of judging appreciated having a longer period of time with the work. However, they also told us that in general it would be easier to judge if students were to produce a moving image presentation lasting between a minute or two accompanied by supporting images to allow for greater in-depth examination of your work. If you are in your second year and may look to enter again next year this would be worth bearing in mind.
Students who did submit a moving image file started each one with the introduction of the brief. As each judge has a copy of the brief and it’s discussed in a group beforehand it was not felt to be the best use of the time in which you can showcase your ideas. If you are looking to enter again it may be worthwhile producing a shorter edit of your presentation without the introduction for submission into the awards.
For the What Else Do You Do? Category the judges were disappointed at the lack of self-initiated projects submitted. Also, those responding to a creative brief did not supply information on the brief they were working to, making it difficult to know whether the response was appropriate or not.
The perennial problem of grammar and spelling was also discussed amongst the juries at great length. The feedback was that if it’s a presentation it should be perfect. Where possible international students should be sharing their work with English speaking colleagues and friends to correct and improve it.
Thank you very much for supporting the D&AD Student Awards, I know many of you will have enjoyed the challenge and although you may not have been successful at this time please don't let that discourage you. You should now have a great piece of work to feature in your portfolio and have developed experience in answering an industry-set brief.
If you’re in your final year you still have the option to apply to attend The Graduate Academy in August. For more information visit: www.dandad.org/talent
Best wishes,
Fergal Kilroy
