Creative Industries Week 5:Name a company with an about us, name the roles of responsibilities and the cultures

The company i looked at was Yuke's, which is a Japan based company and has 85 employees, established on February 26, 1993 is widley known for the work on the WWE Smackdown! game series. As i searched throughout their website the closest thing i could find to roles are the roles which they were hiring for, which were

  • 3D Rendering Programmer- Is the job which is to be able to create 3D representations of the object.

  • 2D/3D Effect Programmer-Who's job is to develop a transition from 2d to 3d objects.

  • Audio Programmer-Has to be able create certain audio to match with the work created.

  • Interface Programmer-Is the programmer who has to make all the functions work together for the movement of the character to be in line with the player who wants it to move.

  • Network Programmer-Has to be able to allow the players of the game go on their consoles network using the game, for example using our game if its a fighting game then being able to fight aginst other players online.

I believe that Yuke's is a Power Culture because it has certain employees working on certain areas of the latest game like sound, modelling and more and with each employee working on certain areas of the game it constantly is overlooked by the head of the game management to make sure the employees areas are all working on and towards the finished product.

As you see above was my first attempt at looking at a specific company and failing at what i thought i had to do i went back and redid the task...

and found 'Blizzard' an American video game developer, beginning their battle.net online program in 1997 their success grew and so have the list of some the best-selling games createsd such as Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo and the number 1 global subscription based online game World Of Warcraft.

Blizzard-Information found from their website-

Main Purposes/Misssion-'Dedicated to creating the most epic entertainment experiences...ever.' Along with this statement they have eight core values that they follow which they believe has guided them to success:

  • Number 1-Gameplay First, "Everything we do at Blizzard Entertainment is based on the success of the gaming experience we provide our players. The goal of each discipline within the company-be it art, programming or customer support-- is to make our games as fun as possible for as many people as we can reach."

  • Number 2-Commit to Quality, " 'Blizzard Polish' just doesnt refer to our gameplay experiences, but to every aspect of our jobs. We approach every task carefully and seriously. We seek honest feedback and use it to improve the quality of our work. At the end of the day, most players won't remember whether the game was late -- only it was great.

  • Numbr 3-Play Nice, Play Fair. "dIn our business first impressions are important --but lasting impressions are everything. We strive to maintain a high level of respect and integrity in all interactions with our players, colleagues, and business partners. The conduct of each Blizzard ENtertainment employee, whether online or offline, can reflect on the entire company."

  • Number 4-Embrace your Inner Geek, "Everyone here is a geek at heart. Cutting-edge technology, comic books, science fiction, top-end video cards, action figures with the kung-fu grip...Whatever it is they're passionate about, it matters that each employee embraces it! Their unique enthusiasm helps to shape the fun, creative culture that is Blizzard Entertainment."

  • Number5-Every Voice Matters, "Great ideas can come from anywhere. Blizzard Entertainment is what it is today beacuse of the voices of our players and each members of our company. Every employee is encouraged to speak up, listen, be respectful of other opinions and embrace criticism as just another avenue of great ideas."

  • Number 6-Think Globally, "Everywhere on the planet there are people who play Blizzard Entertainemtn gaems. While respecting the cultural diversity that makes people unique we strive to grow and support our global community. We also seek the most passionate, talented people in the world to enrich our company and help us forge the future vison of Blizzard Entertainment."

  • Number 7-Lead Responsibly, "Our products and practices can affect not only our employees and players -- but the industry at large. As one of the world's leading gaming companies, we're committed to making ethical decisions, always keeping our players in mind and setting a strong example of professionilism and excellence at all times."

  • Number 8-Learn & Grow, "The gaming industry is ever-changing. Technology improves, techniques change, and design philosophies become outdated. Since the founding of Blizzard Entertainment, we've worked to improve through experience, teaching one another and cultivating the desire to be tha best at what we do. We see this as an individual responsibility as well as a company one. Employees can count on their peers, managers and the company itself to be supportive and help them gain the knowledge and training they need."

My view of their mission or purpose shows they just don't care for their income but the output and the gamers and shows that people who care should check this company out and after reading all of there eight core values that they follow makes me interested in this company as i only chose them for this task which i had been set. (Making a really good impression on me)

Job Titles-I wasn't able to find their jobs list but was able to find 187 jobs available on their website and knew i don't have that much time to write all of the list and so i will just write the ones that stand out to me-

Blizzard Entertainment is on the hunt for an exceptional 3D artist who can do it all; modeling, texturing, animation, and visual effects. The position offers a unique opportunity to partner with team engineers and push the rendering capabilities of our target platform(s) with the goal of creating immersive and spectacular environments."

  • Motion Artist-Is the work of an artist who can create a sequence of movements using motion captures, for example by having a actor wear a motion capture suit which on the software would show him wearing a different look which would be captured to be used in the game or film. • and 187 more.
The departments which are there, are
  • Art-2d sketches of the next game which is in production and ideas for other aspects of the game.
  • Motion Capture-Transferring the captured movements to be edited and modified during animation.
  • Animation-The actual movement of characters or objects as well as inserting and combining the motion captures.
  • Sound-The noises of wildlife and other noises which would be needed and voice over actors for character interactions.
  • Programming-Is the whole functioning and interaction of the game for when a character starts a fight against another character then the functions which would be needed for the gamer to control the character during that bout.
Culture-I believe that Blizzard Entertainment is a power culture because each department would only function with the other department for the final outcome for example the animation won't begin without the motion capturing. The department i am more focused within is the art department due to creating your own characters and environment is one of my main passions of art.

  1. You have found some basic information about this company but have formed an opiion about its culture based on supposition and not on any facts discovered on the webs site. However, yo do show some understanding of the theory behind Power Culutre.

I am concerned that you description of some of responsibilities behind the roles appearing the vacancies section of this website show a lack of understanding of teh difference between a programmer and a designer.

I woul give this 46% beacuse it does identify the main points of the task but it lacks evidence of background research that would have informed your statements
