Contextual and Theoretical Studies Week 3:Find something-which to me defines 'Punk Graphics'

This week we have to search for anythin which we belive to be or could be the defeinition of Punk Graphics and i have searched and found:
This image i think really defines the nature of the punk graphics, having the black stand out text with the combination of dark colour to make everything into one image.
Here is another example but with colour used showing more of the dark emotion in the graphics, to me these images resembled the definition of punk because of its dark theme and out spoken rights.

Creative Industries Week 7:Blog my reflection on this weeks lesson

This weeks lesson was mainly focused on ourselves in the way we act and the way we work and i believe i was perceived as quiet, getting to and focusing on the work and able to mainly work by myself and i think that sums me pretty much. But my weaknesses of not being much of a leader and a team playere because of me being quiet gives me a different aspect of the way i work, seeing myself as a lone worker likes to focus on the work and tries to make the work perfect.

We had taken a class personality test (Myers Briggs) in which i was a ISTJ which was written as being 'Quiet, serioues, earn success by thoroughness and dependability. Practical, matter-of-fact, realistic, and responsible. Decide logically what should be done and work toward it steadily, regardless of distractions. Take pleasure in making everything orderly and organized-their work, their home, their life. Value traditions and loyalty.' and with reading that i beagn to take pride in what it said it, it made me feel as if everything i did was a good decision for me.

After that lesson i learned alot about myself and the way i am and i think that with that i can achieve what i am aiming towards and that is to be a games designer, focusing on characters, landscapes and other designs of the gaming world.

Ninja Assasin Trailer

From the creators of the Matrix is the next film whcih looks really, really good and releasing in USA next week 25th of November on Wednesday and we have to wait till January 8th 2010 but then it will be worth the wait especially from the trailer below:

Dug's Special Mission from the Up movie come the short film about Dug

To everyone who's seen Up loves it and from that comes the short film, well 5 min film of the character/dog Dug (i loved it):

Wolfman Trailer

As well as medieval settings the idea of vampires, werewolves or anything out of ordinary seems interesting to me and in this case wolves is an interest and this is teh trailer for Benicio Del Toro director of Hellboy 1 and i think 2, remake of the 1941 classic Wolfman and here is the Februaury 12th release Wolfman:

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Trailer

i always liked the medieveal films and shows but this with the 12 gods is really interesting to me here's the trailer about the sons of the gods and i think its release is februaury 12th in the U.K.

Creative Industries Week 6:Analyse a gaming magazine

Those who did not attend the Bradford Games Festival were told to analyse a gaming magazine and in doing so i hose the magazine called 'Games Master', so as i began to analyze the magazine (along with the magazine cam a poster of The Simpsons Game and a small cheats book)besides that on the cover, which caught my interest of the magazine was the large figure of homer simpson as the main feature of the magazine was The Simpsons Game, along with that were the review of the game Metroid Prime:Corruption, WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008, Halo 3 and more. As i opened the pagehere was a full paged advert of the Halo 3 game and a welcome message from the editor, carrying on was the contents page listingall the features, reviews and extras page numbers.

The magazine had an interesting read on latest gaming hardware such as a Nokia N-Gage which allows players to play games in the bst way on their mobile, the rumour of a playstation phone and competitions for the latest gaming hardware. Dwelling deeper into the magazine you realise that the reviews aren't just for game and gaming hardware but all hardware such as the PSP, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Ds and others and as you read on the amount of images put together let you see the true game quality and with most of the main features of the magazine having a wide paged spread you see more screenshots of the game showing aspects you didn't realise were there such as crowds in teh game would not be 3d to have more focus on the main characters and the magazine lets readers see as well as read teh reviews of the game on other consoles.

Reading on the magazine has verdict of the game likes and dislikes as well as the overall rating, with most pages about game reviews there are some adverts which have a connection with the games such as Natwest allowing gamers to have a account to purchase things on the playstation network and gaming software. There was a two paged letters to the editor pages whcih has a video of the month screenshot and as well as the new games on show they have pages on 'We Love Old Games' having readers tell the magazine their favourite classics and getting to the main feature you see not only a wide paged spread but a five paged review of the game explaining the features, storyline, screenshots and more about the game.

Althoguh the magazine has reviews of the big named games it also has a round-up of reviews of games which wouldn' fit into the magazine but summarised and also having enough pages for tips of the month, cheats, spoilers, magazine offers and a mobile downloads section. Overall the magazine allows readers a full insight of game that have been, already and will be released which has areas on improvements, screenshots and the features of the games. For me this magazine has more then enough information on coming games and to me the images that come with the reviews are more than enough of what the game looks like and depening on the features of the magazine readers would be interested in the magazine, to the ages of 12 and over due to its in-depth analysis of teh games which perhaps wouldn't understandable to children.

Contextual and Theoretical Studies Week 2:Describe 'The Uncanny' in an animated film

The animated film i have chosen that has the uncanny effect in is 'Monster House', following Polar Express the film is only the second film to use performance capture and it was said that the film makers wanted to avoid criticism from audiences and avoid the same fate as Polar Express, as the animation and facial looks were toned down from being 'Ultra-Photorealistic looks so the audience were not "creeped out" and was the effect of the Uncanny Valley which is believed to be the lifelike of a robot or similar things that have the exact lifelikes of a human but has a dip in the graph of human reactions to robots reactions.

I had chosen Monster house as it has the Uncanny effect as the story begins with the audience following the main character Dustin J. "D.J" Walters as he spends most of his free time watching the house across from his, which is owned by a mean old man who terrorizes anyone who comes near his home, as the story progresses DJ and his chubby friend Charles "Chowder" are playing basketball which lands on teh old mans lawn, DJ goes to pick the ball up but gets grabbed by the old man who has a stroke after DJ starts screaming and when the paramedics take the old man away, who is supposedly dead, DJ sees a gold key on the lawn and takes it. That night DJ gets a call from teh old mans house which is just moaning and groaning hearing this DJ calls Chowder and they agree to investigate and when Chowder rings the bell the house attempts to eat him, running back to DJ's house they spend the night watching the house and unknowingly knowing that DJ's sisters ex-boyfriend had already been eaten by the house.

The next day Jennifer "Jenny" Bennet is selling halloween chocolates and when she goes to the house across from DJ's and seeing this DJ and Chowder run out to warn her before she could be eaten and after almost being eaten Jenny calls the police but when they get there the house doesn't react when the kids are teasing it. They then go to ask advice from Reginald "Skull" Skullinski who says that the home "Domus Mactibilis" (Deadly Home, in Latin) when a human soul emerges with a man-made structure. The children then begin to believe that it is the old man back from the dead and that they should destroy the heart to get rid of the house and DJ notices that the chimney has been smoking (like a beating heart) ever since the old man is seemingly dead. The children then create a dummy filled with cold medicine hoping to drug the house but as the house was about to eat the dummy the police return and arrest the children for taking the cold medicine and place them in the car but then the house eats the police and the car but the children get out in time.

The kids then explore the house which they then notice that the house has fallen asleep because they see lights in the shape of a 'Uvula' and Chowder believes it to be the heart and as the other two kids continue searching the house they begin to find demoliton tools and a locked cage which DJ opens with the key he took from the lawn and find the body of Constance the Giantess, the wife of the old man, covered in cement and then the house realizes that the kids are inside and starts to attack them but the kids escape by pulling on the Uvula and in which the house 'Vomits' them out. As the kids return home the old man returns home in a n ambulunce in which the kids realize that it wasn't the old mans soul but constances soul which is merged with the home.

Going to the old man about what they know he tells the kids the whole story, that he had met the obese woman fromthe circus and fell in love with her and helping her escape from the circus, the old man began building the home that constance always wanted but still kids taunted her for her large appearance and on one occasion on halloween they threw eggs and tomatoes at her to which she chased them and lost her footing and was falling off the houses foundation and as she atempted to grab on to the cement mixers lever, the cement began to pour onto her as she fell to the ground and was coverd mostly in cement. The old man had finished the house despite constance's death, yet found that her soul had merged with the home and the old man had begun to get the reputation of a child-hater because he tried to keep children away from the home and from the wrath of constance.

However the old man believed it was time to destroy the house but the house overhears and grows four tree parts as legs and goes after the kids and the old man and as they run away they run towards a construction site which the old man attemtps to throw a dynamite stick at the house with no effect DJ begins to climb a crane and throws a dynamite stick down the chimney of the house where it reaches the furnace of the home and blows up the house completely. The kids then see the old man dancing with the spirit of constance as she fades away and DJ apologizes to the old man but the old man thanks DJ for freeing him and constance from being trapped for 45 years. The story finishes off with the kids and the old man giving the toys he had taken over the years to trick 'r' treaters and Jenny says she wants to hang out with DJ and Chowder sometime as they all leave and after the credits audience see people who had been eaten by the home walking out from the foundation of the home.

I believe that the animated film 'Monster House' has the Uncanny effect because it resembles the house as this living being in the scenes where the lights in hallway is seen as the Uvula, when the children pull on the 'Uvula' the house vomits making the effect that the house is sick and the basis that the house's 'heart' was the furnace as it kept the home warm or 'living' as the heat is flowing through the home, to me the home was made to feel like it was human due to the story being that the house was possessed by Constance and that using such affects as the furnace is the heart to make the audience believe that home was haunted and lifelike. Also the creators of the film, i believe are trying to portray the house as a human using certain objects of the house as human movements thus making it Uncanny to the extent people wouldn't believe a home to be a living human because it is doing the opposite of what it was constructed to do and that is stay still and provide shelter.

Animation Week 7:Rendering

A weak attempt but its still my first rendered object and in my opinion good.

Contextual and Theoretical Studies Week 1:The Uncanny

The Uncanny brought into more of an understanding by Sigmund Freuds essay which created in 1919 after reading his version of the representation of the uncanny and i have summarised it to the way i believed to have read it:

The uncanny is the story of Nathaniel who at a young age was told of a story in which if he didn't go to bed early would get a visit fro the sand-man who was believed to come and take the young childrens' eyes which don't go to sleep early and would then take them back to his own children to be fed. However due to an incident in which the belief of the sand-man story being true an dseeing his father die in his studies resulted in a childhood trauma which had him seeing things in a different way than what they really are as teh example of him believing that the doll Olympia was a real human. As the story unfolds the figure of the sand-man begins to appear constantly in places near Nathaniel and which in one appearence after buying what Nathaniel was told were weather glasses, which as time progressed were constantly used and each tme Nathaniel had thought he had seen the sand-man but being unsure he used the weather glass which put his vision in different aspect which led to him seeing the sand-man wherever he went and having flshbacks of his childhood incident.

But because of that incident in his childhood led to reprecussions in his present adult life with him seeing the sand-man and whilst having the flashback Nathaniel began to shout "Ring of Fire, Spin About!" and trying to escape from what he believe to be fire began to scale a tower which after intense screams and one last look at the sand-man let go and fell from the tower and shattered his skull. The story finishes with the author writing at how the story was merely there to show the uncanny events which from Nathaniels childhood past led to him being afraid of a figure which was believed to of been following him, which made him afraid and see things as unclear to the extent of hanging around with a doll which he thought was real because of how life like it looked.

My experience of this was story was that the idea of a figure lurking in the shadows of the night was to cme out and take the eys of children if they didn't go to bed early was a good story but the build ofrom the incident in his childhood to what happened at the end was to me a good kind end to the story and to the notion of you shouldn't believe everything you hear and at the end in the analysis of the author trying to make out that the doll was a real character which didn't speak was pretty good in my view.

Dante's Inferno Info and Animated Trailer

Dante's Inferno is loosely based on the first part of Dante's Divine Comedy. The player controls Dante, a veteran of the Crusades, who chases his beloved Beatrice and attempts to free her soul from Lucifer. As his pursuit takes him through the 9 Circles of the Inferno to Beatrice, he will battle monsters, face his sins, his family past and his war crimes. It seems according to the anime movie trailer and the game trailers, that Lucifer needs a soul, ment for heaven, and possible Dante to free himself from Inferno and return to Paradise to try another attempt to take over the Throne of God. Dante goes to save Beatrice and to stop the plans of Lucifer from taking effect.

Confirmed Bosses: Charon, King Minos.

The Second Circle of Hell - Lust

Confirmed Boss: Cleopatra

The Third Circle of Hell - Gluttony
Having defeated both King Minos and Cleopatra, Dante journeys to the next circle, one populated by gluttonous demons, landscapes made of human flesh, clouds of urine, rivers of defecation and the insatiable appetite of gorger worms. There he must face the "great worm", Cerberus, a mass of worm-like stomach protruding from a open maw.
Confirmed Boss: Cerberus

The Fourth Circle of Hell - Greed
Defeating Cerberus, Dante enters the circle of Greed, which is mechanical in nature compared to the previous circles. Within the circle are occupants who are boiled alive in molten gold below, condemned for spending their life hoarding and or wasting riches. In this "factory of torture," Dante will be faced with the horrendous puzzles of the Wheel of Fortune which is used to deliver punishment, and come face to face against the fallen god Plutus, a living golden statue.
Confirmed Boss: Plutus

The Sixth Circle of Hell - Heresy
Upon entrance into Hell's capital, the burning City of Dis, Dante descends into the lair of the Heretics who are trapped in flaming tombs and nailed to inverted burning crosses. The Dark Priests, necromancers and conjurers are free to worship the "Fallen One" and guard this circle. The souls of the ancient followers (Ex. Abraham) are trapped here as well, waiting the arrival of "The One" and their redemption. Dante also encounters a former Crusader friend who died because of him.
Confirmed Boss: Unknown At This Time

The Seventh Circle of Hell - Violence

The Eighth Circle of Hell - Fraud

The Ninth Circle of Hell - Treachery
Having journeyed through all of Hell, confronted his past and atoned for his sins, Dante must now face Lucifer in his true form: a giant, three-headed demon. Only by defeating the Prince of Darkness himself can Dante save Beatrice, and his own soul.
Confirmed Boss: Lucifer

This is the trailer for Dante's Inferno the animated film which will be released in February 2010:

Below is one screenshot of the game which people are saying is similar to the God of War game.

Creative Industries Week 5:Name a company with an about us, name the roles of responsibilities and the cultures

The company i looked at was Yuke's, which is a Japan based company and has 85 employees, established on February 26, 1993 is widley known for the work on the WWE Smackdown! game series. As i searched throughout their website the closest thing i could find to roles are the roles which they were hiring for, which were

  • 3D Rendering Programmer- Is the job which is to be able to create 3D representations of the object.

  • 2D/3D Effect Programmer-Who's job is to develop a transition from 2d to 3d objects.

  • Audio Programmer-Has to be able create certain audio to match with the work created.

  • Interface Programmer-Is the programmer who has to make all the functions work together for the movement of the character to be in line with the player who wants it to move.

  • Network Programmer-Has to be able to allow the players of the game go on their consoles network using the game, for example using our game if its a fighting game then being able to fight aginst other players online.

I believe that Yuke's is a Power Culture because it has certain employees working on certain areas of the latest game like sound, modelling and more and with each employee working on certain areas of the game it constantly is overlooked by the head of the game management to make sure the employees areas are all working on and towards the finished product.

As you see above was my first attempt at looking at a specific company and failing at what i thought i had to do i went back and redid the task...

and found 'Blizzard' an American video game developer, beginning their battle.net online program in 1997 their success grew and so have the list of some the best-selling games createsd such as Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo and the number 1 global subscription based online game World Of Warcraft.

Blizzard-Information found from their website-

Main Purposes/Misssion-'Dedicated to creating the most epic entertainment experiences...ever.' Along with this statement they have eight core values that they follow which they believe has guided them to success:

  • Number 1-Gameplay First, "Everything we do at Blizzard Entertainment is based on the success of the gaming experience we provide our players. The goal of each discipline within the company-be it art, programming or customer support-- is to make our games as fun as possible for as many people as we can reach."

  • Number 2-Commit to Quality, " 'Blizzard Polish' just doesnt refer to our gameplay experiences, but to every aspect of our jobs. We approach every task carefully and seriously. We seek honest feedback and use it to improve the quality of our work. At the end of the day, most players won't remember whether the game was late -- only it was great.

  • Numbr 3-Play Nice, Play Fair. "dIn our business first impressions are important --but lasting impressions are everything. We strive to maintain a high level of respect and integrity in all interactions with our players, colleagues, and business partners. The conduct of each Blizzard ENtertainment employee, whether online or offline, can reflect on the entire company."

  • Number 4-Embrace your Inner Geek, "Everyone here is a geek at heart. Cutting-edge technology, comic books, science fiction, top-end video cards, action figures with the kung-fu grip...Whatever it is they're passionate about, it matters that each employee embraces it! Their unique enthusiasm helps to shape the fun, creative culture that is Blizzard Entertainment."

  • Number5-Every Voice Matters, "Great ideas can come from anywhere. Blizzard Entertainment is what it is today beacuse of the voices of our players and each members of our company. Every employee is encouraged to speak up, listen, be respectful of other opinions and embrace criticism as just another avenue of great ideas."

  • Number 6-Think Globally, "Everywhere on the planet there are people who play Blizzard Entertainemtn gaems. While respecting the cultural diversity that makes people unique we strive to grow and support our global community. We also seek the most passionate, talented people in the world to enrich our company and help us forge the future vison of Blizzard Entertainment."

  • Number 7-Lead Responsibly, "Our products and practices can affect not only our employees and players -- but the industry at large. As one of the world's leading gaming companies, we're committed to making ethical decisions, always keeping our players in mind and setting a strong example of professionilism and excellence at all times."

  • Number 8-Learn & Grow, "The gaming industry is ever-changing. Technology improves, techniques change, and design philosophies become outdated. Since the founding of Blizzard Entertainment, we've worked to improve through experience, teaching one another and cultivating the desire to be tha best at what we do. We see this as an individual responsibility as well as a company one. Employees can count on their peers, managers and the company itself to be supportive and help them gain the knowledge and training they need."

My view of their mission or purpose shows they just don't care for their income but the output and the gamers and shows that people who care should check this company out and after reading all of there eight core values that they follow makes me interested in this company as i only chose them for this task which i had been set. (Making a really good impression on me)

Job Titles-I wasn't able to find their jobs list but was able to find 187 jobs available on their website and knew i don't have that much time to write all of the list and so i will just write the ones that stand out to me-

  • Programming-Is the whole functioning and interaction of the game for when a character starts a fight against another character then the functions which would be needed for the gamer to control the character during that bout.
Culture-I believe that Blizzard Entertainment is a power culture because each department would only function with the other department for the final outcome for example the animation won't begin without the motion capturing. The department i am more focused within is the art department due to creating your own characters and environment is one of my main passions of art.
